The Round 5 Wash-Up
Gather Round showed us the best South Australia had to offer, some great games of football, some not so great.
From a SuperCoach perspective, the theme of the round was not to look a gift horse in the mouth. Many didn’t take their early VC scores hoping a larger one came along, and in a lot of cases, they didn’t.
Who were the Heroes and Villains out of Gather Round?
HEROES
Against the Suns, Brownlow favourite Isaac Heeney cruised to a 196 getting silver service from his ruckmen Brodie Grundy who also had a good score of 124, while the next day at the same venue Bailey Smith 151, Max Holmes 138, and Tanner Bruhn 115 all dominated through the middle of the ground. Archie Roberts rewarded holders with a 145, as did Darcy Parish with a 137, and Jacob Farrow investors would’ve lauded a 102. The one bright spark for Melbourne was Max Gawn finishing on 131. Lachie Neale rewarded owners with a 132, while Harry Sheezel returned to form with a 127, Luke Jackson likes doing it alone and finished on a 125. The number one pick Willem Duursma showed his class to rise to a 105. Finn Callaghan cruised to 135 vs Tigers. Zak Butters powered his way to 145 to top score for the Power, while Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera top scored for the Saints with 136.
Others: Zac Bailey (130), Luke Davies-Uniacke (125), Jordan Clark (106), Justin McInerney (97)
VILLAINS
Marcus Bontempelli left owners with an 80 after being closely checked by Conor Nash, Josh Worrell struggled in the weather for a 68, and Dan Houston once again laid a turd shaped 55. New owners of Oscar Steene wouldn’t have been happy with a 28 in his bubble game. Caleb Windsor only managed a 30 for those hoping he could cover his BE and just one more week. Tom Stewart was on -1 at half time and then finished on 47. Joel Freijah was suffocated to finish on 57.
Others: Tom McCarthy (64), Josh Treacy (66), Shai Bolton (69 - ping Falcon Footy Pod), Touk Miller (72), Noah Anderson (72), Andy Brayshaw (73), Caleb Serong (73), Jordan Dawson (80)
INJURY & SUSPENSION NEWS:
(for relevant SC players)
Deven Robertson left the game against Geelong late with a knee injury. Andrew McQualter had very little to say post-game, other than to say they will continue to test it.
Ed Richards amazingly turned around to play against the Hawks only to leave the field in the hands of trainers owing to what is reportedly an ankle injury. It looked like a knee issue on the replay, but official word is its an ankle injury.
Dayne Zorko unable to finish the game against North Melbourne owing to a calf injury, Chris Fagan noted post-game he’ll miss a bit of time.
Sean Darcy left the game with a concussion and also head/neck issues. This could be big for Luke Jackson, if the Dockers back in the unicorn to shoulder the load by himself.
Connor Budarick finished the game vs Hawks but reports this evening have revealed he’s had a scan on his lower leg, so keep an eye on those injury updates during the week for further news on that.
Stephen Coniglio exited the Richmond game after failing a HIA, he is now in concussion protocols.
